Why We Made the Sunday Weighted Blanket

A Note from Alex:

At Sunday Bedding, we’ve always emphasized that sleep is highly personal and everyone has their own personal preference - whether they run warm or sleep in an air-conditioned room. This weighted blanket launch is extra personal as it was inspired by my quest for better sleep after being diagnosed with ADHD.

I’ve always been a night owl and forcing myself to sleep earlier has been difficult. I suffered quite a lot just trying to get through high school. With ADHD, I’m willing to try a lot of things to see what works and what doesn’t. Three years ago, I bought a weighted blanket and it was really helpful in getting the restful sleep I needed. Till today, I still sleep with my weighted blanket daily.

After trying several weighted blankets, we made a few tweaks to create our very own rendition of the weighted blanket. Below, I’ve summarized what makes our weighted blanket different and as always feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Who are Weighted Blankets for?

Weighted blankets have their roots as a sleep aid for special needs communities. Weighted blankets have been shown to help autistic adults who experience sensory processing disorders, as well as those who experience ADHD and have trouble falling asleep at night.

If you’re someone that struggles with falling asleep due to various reasons (e.g. stress, anxiety), weighted blankets could be well worth a shot.

How do Weighted Blankets work?

A weighted blanket uses pressure therapy to calm you down. When stressed, your heart beat tends to increase rapidly. The gentle pressure on your body provided by a weighted blanket can activate your parasympathetic nervous system, and promote the production of serotonin, which helps to regulate mood. This is why young babies are often tightly swaddled before sleep.

What makes the Sunday Weighted Blanket different?

  1. Heavier at 9kg (single size): Most weighted blankets are around 10% of the average body weight. We prefer a heavier weight (around 15% of body weight) to mimic the feeling of being swaddled and to reduce movements at night.

  2. Easy Washing: One of the pet peeves I had using a weighted blanket was how difficult they are to wash! Most of the ones I’ve had end up not being washed at all! This time, we designed ours with a removable double ply duvet cover in our signature Bamboo Sateen material so it can be easily thrown into the wash. Our duvet cover was also specially made to hold the weighted blanket securely.

  3. Sustainable filling: As part of our ethos, we are always trying to incorporate sustainable materials as much as possible, without compromising on functionality. Our weighted blanket has a filling of 90% glass beads and 10% recycled polyester. Glass beads have the benefit of being hypoallergenic and a much higher density - providing the same weightiness without looking bulky visually.
