Behind the Collection: Shapes of Time - How Nature Remembers with Shan Shan Lim

Shapes of Time Sheet Set

Shan Shan Lim is the artist behind our newest print, Shapes of Time. A Malaysian artist and designer, her work spans sculpture, textiles, and object design, defined by an organic, sensual aesthetic. Her signature style features hand-dyed textures, fluid forms, and rich colour palettes inspired by Southeast Asian heritage.

We were introduced to Shan Shan through our stockist in Kuala Lumpur and were immediately drawn to her soothing, sensory-friendly use of colour. We began collaborating in early 2024, and sat down with her for a quick chat about the inspiration behind this collection.

What was the inspiration behind the collection?

The collection was inspired by the jagged rocks and quiet rhythms of the deep blue waters in Mykonos, Greece. I was at an artist residency there by the ocean and the landscape drew me in. It was the kind of place that compels you to slow down. A good setting for listening, observing, and letting ideas take shape.

Were there any creative blocks during the design process, and how did you overcome them?

Surprisingly, no. This piece came together during a quiet, reflective time at the residency. It felt like the noise of everyday life had been dialled down, and I could finally hear myself think. There was no pressure, no deadline looming over me. Just time, space, and sunlight. In that kind of environment, the work flowed easily. I’m grateful for that time. That kind of creative outpouring doesn’t always come easily!

How did you adapt your artistic style for a medium like bedding?

The original artwork was hand-painted, layer by layer. I then scanned it and recreated the composition digitally using textured brushes that mimic the feel of paint and pigment. The aim was to retain that tactile, handmade quality, so even in its printed form, it still feels intimate and organic.

What does “rest” or “home” mean to you, and how did that influence your approach?

Rest, to me, means space to pause, realign and return to yourself with grace. Home is people. I can feel at home anywhere in the world as long as I’m surrounded by good company, nature, and a sense of safety. That idea shaped the collection: I wanted it to feel like a gentle exhale.

What do you hope people feel when they experience this collection in their homes?

I hope it brings a sense of serenity. In a world that’s constantly rushing forward, I wanted this collection to feel like a pause, like witnessing the stillness of nature.
