OUR PACKAGING

The tradeoff we make between product packaging and brand experience

THE CHALLENGE WITH PRODUCT PACKAGING

As with many brands, one of the tradeoffs that we often struggle with is the amount of packaging in our products versus the brand experience we want to provide. We minimise the use of plastic in our packaging and opt for cardboard boxes and paper packaging that are 100% recyclable. All product care and thank you cards are constructed from recycled paper.

That being said, we recognize that cardboard boxes are not the most sustainable form of packaging if customers do not recycle nor reuse them. While we have contemplated using a canvas bag as packaging, multiple life cycle assessment studies have found that canvas bags to be even less sustainable than plastic bags.

UTILIZING DEADSTOCK FABRIC

Moving forward, we are incorporating the use of deadstock fabric from our factories to replace some of our cardboard packaging. While our factory's fabric utilization rate of 95% is much higher than the industry standard, some fabric wastage inevitably still occurs.

Starting February 2020, you may find some of our orders packed using our deadstock fabric in a Furoshiki wrap. These fabric wraps can be re-used by customers in a variety of ways highlighted here. Please note that fabric wraps are subject to our factory's availability and may differ in colour/material. Should the fabric be unavailable, we will use cardboard boxes for our packaging.

SWITCHING OUR POLYMAILERS

Polymailer bags are an unfortunate requirement by our last mile logistics partners. We're happy to announce that as of June 2021, we are switching our recycled plastic mailers to the #INVISIBLEBAG, developed by the Invisible Company in Hong Kong. Made from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), starch, glycerin and water, these plastic-free mailers leave behind no toxic residue or microplastics. They also dissolve in warm water for easy disposal.
